NOTE: This video has been re-edited as of 4/18/12! It previously included folks with their dogs off-leash in an area that may in fact be an off-leash allowed area. I have since removed those portions of the video so as not to falsely label those dog owners as law breakers. The area in question is a trail that runs alongside the fenced in Canine Commons area, off of the south parking lot. The rest of the area adjacent to and including the south parking lot IS clearly marked as on-leash ONLY. The folks and their dogs in this video are walking their dogs off-leash in the on-leash area.

Alston Park in Napa, California, is one of the busiest and most visited parks in the City of Napa, if not the top most frequented.

There's one major problem here. Too many people allow their dogs to run off leash in the on-leash area. Most of Alston Park requires dogs to be leashed at all times. And there are signs everywhere indicating this. However, there are a couple designated areas that allow dogs to run off-leash. The areas where dogs ARE required to be leashed are well marked.

But most people ignore this rule, to the ire of park goers that do follow the rules. There are many dog attacks here where people and their dogs have been attacked by dogs not leashed by irresponsible dog owners. Even a normally friendly dog can become aggressive if around another dog with a personality it doesn't like. For everyone's safety and the safety of other pets, dogs are required to be leashed. If these people want to let their dogs run unleashed, they need to do so in the designated area only.

Besides safety, it is common courtesy to others to leash dogs. Most people I know do not want an unknown dog running up to them, jumping, licking, sniffing and slobbering all over their feet and legs. Joggers don't want unleashed dogs running amuck, running in front of them, getting under their feet or otherwise just getting in the way. Because dogs will do that. They are curious and like to run up to strangers. Some dogs can be unpredictable too.

So, many people have complained about this problem at Alston Park. Some have stopped going there because of it, and out of fear for their safety or to spare their annoyance. Many letters to the editor have appeared in the opinion section of the Napa Valley Register newspaper in regards to this issue.

I decided to head over there to check it out on a late Tuesday morning. Only one person out of the whole bunch was seen actually following the rules. And this place sure is busy!!
